An Introduction to Lanzhou Modern Vocational College

Lanzhou Modern Vocational College was established in 2016, built upon the foundation of 10 original vocational schools in Lanzhou. It is a full-time higher vocational college offering both higher and secondary vocational education. The college is located in the Lanzhou New Area Science and Education Park, the fifth national-level new district in China. The campus covers an area of 2708 mu (approximately 1805 acres), with a total building area of 10.03 million square meters. The total investment in the college exceeds 5 billion yuan.

The college comprises eight secondary colleges: Urban Construction, Science and Engineering, Health and Wellness, Finance and Trade, Education and Arts, Agriculture and Forestry Technology, Tourism and Aviation, and Continuing Education. It has a student population of 25,500, including 17,200 higher vocational students and 8,300 secondary vocational students. The faculty consists of 1,378 members, including 1,175 full-time staff and 203 part-time instructors.

In recent years, the college has maintained a graduate employment rate of over 92%. It has cultivated more than 14,000 high-quality technical and skilled talents for society, significantly enhancing its social appeal and influence. The college has been recognized as a pilot school for comprehensive educational reform in Gansu Province, a practice base for vocational enlightenment and labor education for primary and secondary schools, a model school for drug prevention education, a water-saving university, and a star competition zone for the Belt and Road Initiative and BRICS countries skills competition. It has also been awarded the title of “Most Trusted Higher Vocational Institution by High Schools” by China Education Online.

Among the eight affiliated secondary vocational schools, three are national key vocational schools, three are national demonstration schools, and three are provincial “Double-Excellent” schools.

Facilities

The college boasts superior internship and practical training conditions. It has one national-level key laboratory and innovation center, 14 large-scale production-type internship workshops, 350 internship laboratories, and 10,947 internship stations. The total value of internship and experimental equipment is 388 million yuan. The library houses over 1.8 million books and shares access to 2.81 million books in the Science and education park. The campus environment is beautiful, with nearly 600,000 square meters of green space, a 40% green coverage rate, and a 60,000-square-meter artificial lake. The living facilities are complete, with 16 canteens serving over 20,000 teachers and students, achieving a satisfaction rate of over 98% among students. The college has seven indoor gyms, one comprehensive gymnasium with a swimming pool and basketball court, five standard athletic tracks, and 161 outdoor sports fields. Professional Development

The college offers 117 majors, including 60 higher vocational majors and 57 secondary vocational majors, with a match rate of over 77% to regional industries and supply-side reforms. Among these, the higher vocational majors include one provincial backbone major, one national new business brand major, one provincial course ideological and political demonstration major, eight provincial online premium courses, two professional teaching resource libraries, and 38 “1+X” certificate system pilot majors. The secondary vocational majors include 12 national key majors, one provincial backbone major, and one provincial brand major.

The college is currently advancing the “Dual-High” plan, focusing on cultivating three provincial-level high-level professional clusters in intelligent manufacturing, architectural engineering technology, and e-commerce. Additionally, it is developing five school-level high-level professional clusters in mechatronics technology, tourism management, nursing, modern agricultural technology, and early childhood education, forming a professional system of “one cluster per institute, one brand per institute.”



Teaching Reform

The college aims to cultivate high-quality technical and skilled talents with “unique craftsmanship and superior skills.” It vigorously promotes the “position-course-competition-certificate” integrated talent cultivation model, the modern apprenticeship talent cultivation model, and comprehensively deepens the “three teachings” reform. It widely promotes the “three extensions and two fusions” teaching model and the “six-in-one” student evaluation system, continuously strengthening the cultivation of students’ comprehensive practical abilities. The college has built a “foundation + enterprise + position” three-training integrated practical teaching system, with practical teaching hours accounting for 51.3% of total class hours. In 2021, the college won two awards for educational achievements in Gansu Province. Over the past three years, students have won 72 first prizes, 145 second prizes, and 310 third prizes in provincial vocational college skills competitions. In the 2023 National Vocational College Skills Competition, the college won one first prize and three third prizes in the higher vocational group, and six third prizes in the secondary vocational group, achieving significant breakthroughs in both quality and quantity. In the Second National Skills Competition, the college won one third prize.



Faculty

The college has 1,018 full-time higher vocational faculty members, including 863 full-time teachers, 211 part-time teachers, 368 teachers with senior titles, 318 teachers with master’s degrees or above, and 709 “dual-qualified” teachers. It has one Ministry of Education New Era Vocational School Master Teacher (Master Craftsman) training object, two national-level technical experts, two provincial-level technical experts, one Longyuan Young Talent, three “151” talents from Lanzhou City, two “Jincheng Master Teachers,” nine “Jincheng Elite” talents, and over 40 vocational education masters, outstanding head teachers, and principals. The college has established seven provincial master teacher studios, three outstanding head teacher studios, one course ideological and political master teacher studio, and 12 skill master studios. In recent years, the college has hired over 20 skill masters and craftsmen and introduced over 120 high-level talents, including seven high-skilled talents in the first batch in 2023. It leads two provincial vocational education groups and one municipal vocational education alliance. The college has co-built three industry colleges with companies like JD.com and Foci Group, participated in five industry-education integration communities, and co-built seven industry-education integration internship and training bases and two teacher enterprise practice mobility stations with companies like SoftWorld Group. It has also co-built the “Numerical Control Processing Skill Level Certificate Management Center” with Huazhong Numerical Control Group.


The college has established strategic partnerships with universities such as Northwest Normal University, Gansu Agricultural University, and Lanzhou University of Technology in areas of talent co-cultivation, platform co-construction, research collaboration, and innovation sharing. It has long-term cooperative relationships with 278 enterprises nationwide and has built 243 off-campus internship bases, opening 65 apprentice classes and order-based classes, achieving full coverage of industry-education cooperation in all majors. In recent years, it has cultivated and delivered over 14,000 high-quality technical and skilled talents to industries and enterprises. It has proactively served the “Strong Provincial Capital” action and the revitalization of “Lanzhou Manufacturing” strategy, conducting retraining for veterans, industrial workers, and rural surplus laborers, benefiting over 80,000 people in the past two years, and hosting nearly 200,000 social examinations.

School Culture

The college has 90 student clubs, regularly organizing campus art festivals, sports festivals, club culture festivals, and other activities throughout the academic year.
